Inspirational stores get my juices flowing!
More from my trip to CA....so many choices so little time! I got an eye full of inspiration in the stores that I visited while in Palo Alto, Menlo Park and San Francisco. One with a fabulous store dog yes he is real!
I am headed for some much needed R&R with my 86 year old mother to Maui. I love the sun and as an Oregonian it is medicinal to get way at this time of year (with the monsoons and all) so chat with you upon my return in a week! Happy decorating!

Making An Impact with Art
As you can see from the barren before photos artwork and furnishings really make the space!
My client moved from Germany to California and asked if I would come down and put the design I had installed in Stuttgart together for him in his California condo. Now the challenge was using the same furnishings in this new (smaller) space.
I added a few things to the mix. I replaced the run of the mill chandelier with the contemporary fixture and added a new floor lamp to the den along with the purchases of some accessories. I added live plants, which always makes a house a home. I also purchased an entry rug and hallway runner. The before bleak condo now has personality. My client said, " I feel comfy." My job is done.

Artist Deborah Van Tuinen
I gathered inspiration for the penthouse pictured below from Artist Deborah Van Tuinen's work "Sky Fire".
As the saying goes it's a small, small world...I exercise at a studio down town and several months ago a new woman came into the studio. I ran into this "new woman" while walking along the water front. We said "Hey lets walk together sometime!" She gave me a slip of paper with her name and number on it I folded up the piece of paper and filed it in a safe place hoping to walk sometime soon. We continued to run into each other at our work outs. Yesterday Deborah said " Are you going to First Thursday? I am an artist and am showing at Butters Gallery." As an interior designer I have purchased many pieces of art on behalf of my client's through Butters ....and Butters Gallery was sooo very kind to loan me the lion's share of artwork for my show home in the Encore for the Street of Dreams... one of which was Deborah Van Tuinen's pieces called Sky fire! ( Sky fire is available at Butters Gallery.) Deborah is one of my favorite artists and I am so thrilled to meet her and hope to walk with her very soon!
Article below written by BY ALYSSA ROSSO
Van Tuinen knew at age five that she wanted to become an artist. Chasing her dream, she studied art at the Byam Shaw Arts Academy in London and later earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Washington. She has worked with internationally known artists in Japan, and glass artist Dale Chihuly asked Van Tuinen to teach him printmaking for a collaborative effort with the Seattle Opera.
Van Tuinen attributes her enhanced technical skills and depth of experience to her widespread background. “My art is my life,” she explains. “All that I experience and see becomes part of my work. How I respond physically, spiritually, and intellectually to my environment is the essence of my work.” Her portfolio details her creative history, which encompasses media as diverse as paintings on canvas and clayboard, etchings, monotypes, Japanese woodblock prints, and tile.
Van Tuinen’s landscapes translate nature’s inspiring vistas into vibrant impressions of color and texture. While her landscapes are reminiscent of the work of classic impressionists, Van Tuinen has built upon the rules established by traditional impressionism. She pushes the envelope of landscape art farther toward the abstract with her work, often causing the viewer to question where reality ends and fantasy begins.
Rather than using oil on canvas, Van Tuinen works with oil encaustic on wood. This technique suspends the pigments in beeswax and damar resin, which is added to the wax as a hardening agent and gives the paintings a rich, glasslike sheen when buffed. An ancient technique, encaustic can encapsulate and preserve the vibrant colors and flowing brushwork for centuries to come.
Van Tuinen adds pearlescence to some of her encaustics to enhance and hone their reflective quality. This pearlescence captures and further defines the peaks and valleys created by the encaustic layers. Then Van Tuinen often washes the entire piece in oil stick to give it one last layer of shine.

Going Mod in Palm Springs Modernism Week Feb-17-27
The sixth annual Modernism Week takes place in Palm Springs February 17 through 27, with a new lineup of midcentury modern design events. As in past years, the celebration will include celebrity home tours, architect panel discussions, a double-decker bus tour, and an exhibit of vintage Airstream trailers. New this year: an interior design tour of local homes and a show of vintage Braniff Airlines uniforms designed by Pucci and Halston. Catch The Architecture of Donald Wexler exhibit at the delightful Palm Springs Art Museum and visit the Palm Springs uptown design district to shop for furnishing finds. Shops like Trina Turk Residential, Christopher Anthony Ltd. (christopheranthonyltd.com), Asylum (asylumhomestore.com), and house 849 carry unique new and vintage decor, everything from Herman Miller pieces to steel fabrications to religious relics. All will ship large purchases, and all offer great pricing compared to LA’s inflated finds.
In keeping with the spirit of Modernism Week, book a room at the recently refurbished Riviera Palm Springs from $360, promo code “ModERN”; . Its über-design aesthetic is a nod to hollywood Regency, Rat-Pack glam (it was a favorite haunt of Frank Sinatra), and midcentury modern design. The renovation kept the original buildings and layout from architect Irwin Schuman, who initially designed the Riviera (opened in 1959) to mimic Las Vegas hotels like The Flamingo and The Stardust. It still feels like Vegas, but better—with two pools, tennis courts, a gorgeous spa, and a swank dining and bar scene. Or check out the Orbit Inn (photo above of me enjoying the sun in an animal print bikini by the pool) or try its sister hotel The Hideaway both very Rat Pack chic!

The Zen inspired Dental Office of Dr. Johnson
Photo below is the Before
When Dr. Johnson acquired this office space, it was in sore need of updating. Dr. Johnson and his staff had some great ideas and we all collaborated on bringing new life this space.
The three dimensional large Balinese wood carving and earth toned art work were the jumping off points for this Zen inspired reception area. New bamboo flooring, a new acoustical ceiling tile painted in a warm Carmel tone along with rattan and leather chairs wash away the former institutional feel of the old reception area. A custom Kaya wood coffee table, Asian area rug and hollowed husk planters with live plants complete the relaxing yet interesting new waiting room.
