Designer Secrets: Important first steps to take when starting your interior design project.
There are tricks in every trade and I want to share some of mine with you!
What do I buy first? Floor Candy
Designer Secret: One of the first questions I get when embarking on a new design project is where do I start? I mentioned in a previous blog that I start with a area rugs and art work as my inspiration and direction for a room. Area rugs are important design elements—just as important as artwork. Pictured above is an heirloom quality area rug from Madison Millinger. This wool hand made area rug has texture and subtle light variations that make it the perfect foundation for this room. Once you have chosen your area rug all of the other design choices fall into place. You can choose the upholstery, drapery, wall color and art work based upon the foundation of a fabulous area rug!
What size rug do I need? How large does my area rug need to be? The living room rug needs to be large enough so that only eight to twelve inches of floor space are visible around the perimeter of your room. For a casual look, furniture can be placed partially on and partially off the rug. For a more formal setting, place all furniture on the area rug. In the dining room the rug needs to extend at least three feet beyond the table to allow chairs to move easily in and out from the table’s edge. In the bedroom the rug should extend three feet from the bed to give your feet a soft place to land.
Designer Secret: Take color photos of your area rugs and carry them with you when shopping for art work and fabrics for your upholstered pieces.
